KATHAK CLASSES

Dear Members,
Firstly we would like to thank you for supporting us in the successful India's Republic Day show and on the back of this event we have had a great response to start a regular cultural activity "Kathak Classes" at our very own hall.

Kathak is one of the eight forms of Indian classical dances and it originates from northern India. The name Kathak is derived from the Sanskirt word Katha meaning story and so this dance form can be translated as "he/she who tells a story through dance" today Kathak is characterised by fast rhythmic patterns of footwork, graceful movement and with "abhinaya" emotional expression through mime.

The teacher is none other than Trishna Kumari, she has learnt from Gauri Sharma Tripathi and has been dancing for over 13 years. Trishna Kumari has been passionate about Kathak from an early age and has performed at many prestigious events and venues including Millennium Dome, Westminster Abbey for the Commonwealth Celebrations for HRH Majesty and many more. She was also invited to perform for Sir Elton John at his White Tie and Tiara Ball in 2006. Her patience, perfection and attention to detail have helped her to bring students up to examination level in her 4 years of teaching experience.

The class will be every Tuesday from 6.00pm till 7.00pm at fee of £75 per school term which on average is 12 weeks. We welcome girls as well as boys and the age group is from 5 years and onwards.
Please call or email us back confirming a place as there are limited places left in the class and if you have any questions or want to know more information then please contact us.

For further information please contact:
Trishna Kumari - 07903 877862 - to email click here

GAA Membership Subscriptions

Dear Members,
In our Biennial General meeting, that was held on the 23rd November 2008, your Association advised that membership costs have not changed for many years, and it was recommended that we should raise them as soon as possible. To that extent, after very careful consideration, the Executive committee have confirmed the Association’s intention to raise membership fees from
1st February, 2009 as follows:

Annual Membership £25
Life Membership £101
Patron Membership £451

Considering the time that fees have been held at current levels and in comparison with other community’s membership costs, GAA London represents very good value. We therefore urge everyone who is not currently a member, especially family members who may have come of age, to take advantage of the current lower rates and seize the opportunity of becoming a Life Member of the Association. Please note that membership forms can be downloaded from our community website www.gaalondon.org.uk.

We sincerely hope that you understand why we need to increase our membership costs and why it is paramount that you do become Members of the Association, By having this affiliation we can become a strong and unified Gujarati community in London and at the same time deliver greatly increased benefits for our members, especially as our facilities and the Association develops from strength to strength.

Kind regards,
GAA London Executive Committee

Cricket Report

Mahashaba 6-a-side Cricket Tournament – Sunday 27th June 2008 Players: Kunal Chauhan, Ricky Solanki, Nilesh Solanki, Dilpesh Gohil, Hitesh Parmar, Viney Chauhan

Report:
There were seven teams in total – 4 from Leicester with Birmingham, Luton and London each bringing a team. Each game lasted 5 over's and each player had to bowl one over.

I can (modestly!) say that we played some great games. We put up some very strong performances and a few of our games went to the last ball. Unfortunately we did not win the tournament (as I expected) nevertheless it was very exciting, nerve wracking and we were each tested to our fullest. There were some goods teams and the standard of play, high.

The usual banter was present both on and off the pitch, as were the typical controversies with scoring, in one particular game the opposition needed 14 runs from the last two balls; however that soon switched to them being level on the last ball and requiring just one run to win!!

Being in Leicester, it had to rain (Nilesh claiming the clouds were from Manchester, but he is a Liverpool supporter), although we also had some glorious sunshine with the rain not halting play too much.

Speaking to the rest of the team, their highlights were the exciting games, meeting many people from our community and the enjoyable day out! Oh yes and the food (sausage rolls courtesy of Viney. Ricky was supposed to bring ondvo, chicken wings and meatballs, but I don't know what happened?)
To summarise we had a great day out, despite not winning! We showed we were capable of matching the better teams and with some more match practice I'm sure we could have reached the final.

I believe these tournaments help us to meet new people within our community and bring us together and I'm hoping by next year we can enter 2 teams (and as always, mums, sisters, wives or ANYONE, please feel free to send food to help us on our way!).

I would like to thank the team, namely, Ricky for his wicket keeping, Nilesh, Dilpesh, Viney and Hitesh for some excellent batting, bowling and fielding.

If you would like to join the cricket practice sessions which take place every Monday and play next year, just get in contact..

    ATTENTION HOTMAIL USERS !!

    Dear Members,
If you are registered to the GAA mailing list with either a Hotmail or MSN email address it may be very likely that you have not been receiving email from us recently, we have investigated and identified the problem:

In a very aggressive move to block SPAMmers and junk mail, hotmail/msn in their wisdom have decided that they know best what email you should or should not receive and have blocked many genuine emails to you, the email will not even show up in your 'JUNK' folder as hotmail/msn filters has decided not to even deliver the email to you for you to decide if it is junk or not.

This message has been posted as an advisory, and we are unable to do anything about the hotmail/msn policy so cannot guarantee that you will receive any email sent by us in the future.

To continue receiving email news and event notification from us, we would advise that you re-register with an alternate email address.

Click here to re -register with a NON Hotmail or MSN email address

We apologise if this has caused you any inconvenience but there is very little we can do about it.

We have had numerous requests to increase these classes and so from the first Sunday in August (5th August) we will be holding classes at 8.00am EVERY Sunday. We hope that those people who have not been able to make it on Tuesday evenings will do so in these new Sunday classes.

Also from August we have to increase the charge to £2.00 per class. You will agree that this is a relatively small price to pay for the upkeep of the hall. The teachers give their services free of any charge

    HYDRO-ACTIVE 5KM FUN RUN

    FOR WOMEN OF ALL AGES
Fund Raising Help from our Community Members

    Dear Ladies (sorry Gents)
With more and more members taking part and helping our community, we are proud that some members have voluntarily put their efforts into organising events in aid of fundraising for our hall, one such couple are Shashi and Hasu Chauhan who wrote to us in an effort to help us raise funds.

As we all know, it is a crucial time for us to help raise funds for our Hall. It is in our best interest, as a community, and for our future generations, to try and HELP and come with a positive approach and commitment, in raising funds.

    We are trying to introduce:
HYDRO-ACTIVE 5KM FUN RUN FOR WOMEN OF ALL AGES.
    It will be held on
Sunday the 16th of SEPTEMBER 2007 IN HYDE PARK.

Therefore, we are looking for women participants (10 years onwards, who are capable of walking, running, or chitchatting and walking). It is a very easy fun loving walk, even for older fit women. This way you can not only just help our community to raise funds, but it is one way of keeping fit too. You can also give inspiration to our young girls, by involving them in this fun run to help our community, and it's an achievement for them too.

We will really appreciate, for all our women to come forward and take an active part, and help us to raise funds, which we are desperately in need of.

So let's work as a TEAM and take our community FORWARD.

    Shashi & Hasu Chauhan

    Navratri Festival 2006

    Dear Community Members,
It is with great regret and sadness that we must inform you that we are unable to hold the Navratri Festival at our hall this year.

The reason for this is as follows: From about June of this year, certain local residents had made some complaints/allegations against the use of our Hall, this in turn prompted Brent Council to serve us with a planning order notice. This planning order notice meant that we were unable to have any kind of public gathering at our hall unless ALL of the planning conditions were met. These planning conditions included putting up signs, installing bicycle parking stands and creating something called a Green Travel Plan etc.

Everyone within the Executive Committee, Board of Trustees and Building Project Committee have been working extremely hard through out the Summer season in order to try and meet all of the conditions that were imposed by Brent Council, especially in time for the forthcoming Festivals. We therefore felt, that we had (to our knowledge) complied with all of the necessary conditions and felt quite confident of the out come when we had asked for special permission to hold this auspicious festival. However, Brent Council have advised us that they are unable to give this permission until they have discharged the notice, which they have not done as yet.

As you can appreciate, GAAL are extremely unhappy with the way that we have been treated as well as to the decision made by this department of Brent Council. We therefore implore all of our Community Members that live in the Brent area to make a formal complaint to your local Councillor.

Once again, we would like to apologise whole heartedly to you for bringing this sad news on the eve of the Festival, but hopefully you are able to understand that we were quite hopeful that we would be allowed to hold this festival at our hall.

If you would like any further information with regards to this issue or you are able to help in any way please contact us.

Please tell everyone you know, as we will not be sending a circular.

    Cricket

    Dear Community Members,
We are trying to get organised for cricket this year and are planning to start nets next week.

We have a nets booked at 2-3 at Northwick Park on Sundays where we used to have football. We do need to know who can and can’t make it to make sure we have enough numbers. There will be other people there from another team I play with so it will only be around £3 each for the session

We do need more players especially batsmen. Can you call any other Mochi’s you know and ask them if they can come to these practice sessions? Please forward them this mail and get them to mail me back so we have their e-mail address so we can add them to the group list. Building Project Update

Last summer, we sent out a brief to the entire community, outlining the difficulties that GAA London had faced with regards to trying to safeguard better terms than were previously prescribed by Brent Council. These lengthy negotiations meant that nearly two years had passed since GAA London had put its bid forward to acquire the property. We concluded in that previous brief that we would soon be in a position to exchange contracts, the great news is that on the 10th October 2002, GAA London exchanged contracts with Brent Council and has paid a £50,000 deposit.
